D.I.Y. Lava Lamp Kit

$15.00

Making a D.I.Y. Lava Lamp is a fun science experiment that demonstrates scientific principles like density and polarity.

  • Lava lamp effect

The lava lamp effect is created by the interaction of different substances with different densities:

    • Oil and water: Oil floats on top of water because it's less dense.

    • Food coloring and water: Food coloring mixes with the water because it has the same density.

    • Tablet and water: A tablet sinks to the bottom and dissolves, releasing carbon dioxide gas. The gas is lighter than water and oil, so it floats to the top, taking some colored water with it.

    • Chemical reaction

The reaction between the tablet and water is an endothermic reaction, which means it pulls heat from the surrounding water. You can use a cooking thermometer to measure the temperature change.

    • Temperature

The temperature of the water affects how quickly the tablet dissolves, which in turn affects the lava lamp's display. Warmer water causes the tablet to dissolve faster, resulting in a more energetic display.

Part of the Crafty Krystal “Science & Sensory” set, perfect for science, discovery & homeschool.

Each kit comes with a bottle with lid, oil, food coloring, and alka-seltzer tablets. Food color is random.
